Buyer Beware

At Price Creek Animal Hospital, our top priority is to provide the best possible care for our patients, while ensuring client satisfaction. A handful of our clients prefer to use online pharmacies for their prescription needs, so we feel led to educate everyone on the implications of using an online pharmacy. Here are some basic reasons for buying medications from your veternarian instead of an online pharmacy:
  • If we have the medication in stock, you can begin medications immediately.
  • We can answer your questions, provide instructions for use, and demonstrate how to give your pet the medication.
  • If you order from a pharmacy and the medication isn't properly shipped (for example, it is allowed to get too hot or too cold) or isn't properly packaged, it could be ineffective or damaged and unusable. Buying from a veterinarian, you know it has been properly handled and you will be informed of how to make sure you handle the medication properly.

Heartworm Preventative

There is one main reason we prefer for clients to purchase their heartworm prevention through a licensed veterinarian. After giving the preventative, if your dog is diagnosed with heartworms, the drug company will pay for heartworm treatment. This is only if you purchase the heartworm prevention from a licensed veterinarian. While the websites you can purchase preventatives from do require a prescription from a veternarian, there is not a licensed veterinarian on staff.

Also, if your pet has heartworms and the wrong medication is given at the wrong time, this could result in your pet's death. Heartworm tests should be performed annually by your veterinarian to ensure your pet's safety.

Pain Relievers (NSAIDS)

Most OTC human medications are not safe for pets because of the different way animal bodies metabolize medications. Medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen can cause severe illness, and even death, in pets. Talk to your veterinarian before giving ANY over-the-counter medications to your pets!

Canadian Medication

Buying medications from Canada is illegal in the United States because they have not been inspected by the Federal Drug Administration.
